A six-session professional development programme designed to equip primary teachers with practical, drama-based strategies to strengthen spoken language, listening, confidence and critical thinking in KS2.

Session 1: Oracy Matters – Why Speaking and Listening Need Drama
The case for oracy in primary education (Voice 21; Education Endowment Foundation)

Drama as a vehicle for purposeful talk, vocabulary development and social interaction
Session 2: Hot Seating – Developing High-Quality Questioning
What hot seating is and how to model it effectively
Strengthening inference, character understanding and depth of response
Building both teacher-led and pupil-generated questioning
Connections to reading comprehension, empathy and critical literacy
Session 3: Teacher in Role – From Passive to Participatory
Using teacher-in-role to deepen engagement and exploratory talk
Planning interactive lessons across subjects (e.g. history, science, PSHE)
Creating psychologically safe spaces for risk-taking in speech
Session 4: Mantle of the Expert – Real-World Talk, Real-World Thinking
Introduction to Dorothy Heathcote’s Mantle of the Expert approach
Structuring imaginary contexts where pupils adopt expert roles
Developing reasoning, persuasive language and collaborative problem-solving
Session 5: Structuring Talk – Scaffolds, Roles and Group Dynamics
Oracy scaffolds: talk frames, sentence stems and discussion roles
Managing group talk to ensure inclusion and active listening
Assessing oracy using the Voice 21 framework
Session 6: Planning for Impact – Embedding Drama Across the Curriculum
Collaborative curriculum mapping
Monitoring oracy progression through observation, pupil voice and peer assessment
Micro-teaching, peer feedback and action planning for whole-school impact
Sessions 1–5 are 60 minutes. Session 6 is recommended at 90 minutes to allow for collaborative planning.
Delivery Options:
Six one-hour sessions: £100 per session + VAT
Full-day INSET: £500 + VAT
Two half-day sessions (timings to suit your setting): £250 per session + VAT
Although designed for KS2, this programme can be adapted for teachers, subject leads and senior leaders in Key Stages 3 and 4. Content is tailored to meet the specific needs of secondary providers.
